Victorian Era vs. Common Era

The times were very different then, and I'm quite sure I'm glad I live today. Despite the fact that the men were the ones with power, I dont think I would enjoy any part of their lifestyle. Their society seems to proper and uptight, and it seems that their life is already planned. The beauty of life in this era is the ability to create your own path, and choose what you want in life. Everyone is different, and I think we value individuality a lot more now than in Jane's time. Another aspect is the openess of our culture, as opposed to the rigid nature of Victorian society. Todays world also is much more open to all religions. It's amazing to have all the worlds religion and culture in one country, and sometimes the diversity makes us realize how much we have in common. People are all different, but we all go through struggles or situations common to all man, similar to archetypes. For example Jane's emotions are present in all humans, but the situation may be different.

  1. It's amazing how despite the apparent differences in societal values there are between the Victorian era and modern day, we can still somehow connect with the experiences and feelings of people centuries before us. Like Tess, we've all had experiences dealing with guilt and shame, and it's these connections we make with the characters that make literature feel more dynamic and engaging. Although we may have better technology, more freedoms, and even dress differently, we all share common experiences and have the unique ability to relate to people centuries before us.

  2. I really agree on the fact that the era we live in is much better. Back then life was unfair, which to me is not the ideal life. Women were inferior comapred to men and for that they were treated wrong, in most cases. Another fact that is true that we can make our own paths now rather than have someone make it for us.

  3. I think it's nice how you compared the novel we read to society today. It's interesting to think about the freedoms we have today and how life would be different if we lived in another time. Nice comparison sir.

  4. I believe that as we go on and begin our lives, after high school; with every step we should appreciate every little step we take: to realize that I as a woman have the right to an education, and that you as a man, have the right to choose your own path, disregarding where your name comes from, or what you choose to become.

  5. As a woman, I am very happy to be living in this era as well. I cannot imagine what it would have been like having your entire life planned or, as a woman, scrutinized daily. It is very nice to see the great diversity that our country has (however the levels of tolerance and acceptance might be questionable) but I very much agree with what you said, "sometimes the diversity makes us realize how much we have in common." That is absolutely true; we're all humans, and we all experience the same emotions and trials every single day.
